My Grand Canyon Debacle

Last summer, my family and I went on a five day excursion to the Grand Canyon. One day into the trip, my wife mentioned to me how great it was to be at the Grand Canyon, and not have to worry about the safety of our house. It was like having our own house sitter, with out having to pay anyone to stay there! She looked at me happily as I smiled at her, reassuring her confidence in our house security as much as I could. She didn’t notice the sweat on my brow as I remembered at that moment; I had not set the security system on my way out the door. Our house was open to all thieves, and vandals.
As we hiked down the trail, the sweat that was pouring down my face had nothing to do with the exertion from my less than adequate physical condition. I imagined my front door being kicked in, or a window being broken, and my flat screen TV walking out the door. I could picture our valuables being hawked at the nearest pawn shop, and having to find each of those items when I returned.
When we returned from our trip, I was the first one inside the door. I checked our home alarm, and to my surprise, someone had set it. All that worry and stress for nothing! A feeling of security, and relief swept over me. My wife winked at me as she came in the door. She knew I had forgotten to set it, and had actually set it herself. Not only that, she knew I hadn’t told her that I had forgotten to set the security system, and let me suffer the whole five days. The punishment fit the crime. I will never forget to set the security system again.
