Fantasy Football, Real Competition

Posted on August 16, 2010 |

Every year, my husband is the commissioner of a fantasy football league. We invite all of our friends, and at the end of the season, the coveted championship trophy goes to the winner. Win or lose, we all have a great time.

The season starts with the draft party, hosted at the local sports bar. We bring our laptops and chow down on beer and wings as we make our selections. The draft can get heated, as we criticize everyone’s picks and complain about our draft position. There’s also competition to see who can come up with the funniest team name. Once teams are in place, we anxiously await the start of the season.

Once football season begins, we often watch the games together on NFL ticket that directv offers in Illinois. There’s all kind of trash talk, and those laptops are open again for up-to-the-minute stats and scores. Some games are lost and won on a single play, much like an actual football game. The winners for the week do a lot of bragging, and the losers for the week vow to get revenge. The six best teams at the end of the season move on the playoffs, and at the end of the season a winner is determined. The winner gets the trophy and bragging rights for a year. The next season, we do it all over again!
